Green Thumb

When we started to redo the backyard landscaping I told Jamie that I wanted to also add some flower baskets to our porch railing. This past weekend when we went to Langley for Jaxon's bday present we also stopped at Cedar Rim Nursery. I found the perfect planter boxes and picked out the flowers that I wanted to plant. To be honest the whole process of picking out the flowers stressed me out.
I have always envied my friends hanging baskets and planter boxes that she creates herself. When we were at the nursery I was so intimidated by the process that I wasn't sure what to pick. After we found the planters I saw that the nursery had already created a planter with flowers in it. I loved what it looked like so I have decided to fashion my planters after it. It was exactly what I needed to create my first planters. Of course, I didn't find the exact same flowers and plants but it was close.

I knew that it was good to have tall things in the middle and then fill with different colors and textures. I decided to have each end of the basket be the same pink flowers to add equal symmetry ( not really but it sounds good).

I absolutely love them! Are they amazing??? Probably not but they are good for me! I love being able to see them from my kitchen window. Its great to have flowers to enjoy outside. I never thought that I would enjoy gardening or creating flower arrangements for my yard but it was definitely a fun endeavor and one that I will keep up.

Ok, so the symmetry you can't really see in this picture because the one pink flower bunch on the left was wilting when I took the picture. But with the rain we have received it has perked up and has filled out already. The picture just doesn't do it justice right now.
I look forward to see how they fill in during the summer season.

As well as making planter boxes I decided to grab flowers for the big barrel that we put in the backyard on the playhouse porch. The barrel was in the front yard when we moved it but we both didn't really like where it was at and it didn't have anything it at the time. So, when we started the landscaping project we emptied it and moved it to the backyard. I think it will look great as it fills in as well.
Do I have a green thumb?? Not yet, but I could just get there. Kind of shocking for those that know me...as I have never liked yard work but I think I am starting to get the gardening bug.

They look awesome Megs!!! Way to go! How fun. I still remember my first planters and how excited I was first of all to plant them and then to watch them grow. But I totally understand the stress of picking out the plants for them....I still get stressed! :-) You go girl!

Hey Meg, Your flowers look great. I always copy the planters at my favorite nursery. They even leave the tags with the names of them stuck in the pots for people like me. I'll give you a big clue that it took me years to find out. Water them EVERY DAY. I always rebelled at that but last year did it and they turned out amazing!
Keep up those learning skills!

i too am a copy-er. i find a picture of an arrangement i like in a magazine, and then i copy it exactly, otherwise my flowers end up looking lame. you are lucky to get rain now and then to perk your's up. if i don't water my flowers AT LEAST once a day (often twice) they won't last until june!

i love the planter boxes you found, they are super cute!
