Formula and Potty Training

Well, it seems like a lot has happened since the last time I posted but not a lot of time has gone by. I have been working for the last two weeks, potty training Aidan and have changed to formula for Jaxon. Last weekend was when we made the food change for Jaxon. You may be wondering why I switched ? The short answer: I'm not super Mom. The long answer: Nursing seems to drain me physically; keeping me exhausted all the time. Jax was getting up at least twice a night and I have started back to work and trying to potty training Aidan. Something had to give. I was noticing that I was snapping (for no reason other than being tired) at both Jamie and Aidan and I don't think it is fair to them. This way Jamie can help out with feeding Jaxon during the day and sometimes in the middle of the night. Our hope though is that once he gets use to the formula he will start sleeping through the night. Jaxon has adjusted well to the formula. At first he was not pooping all that much and you could tell he was trying but after a day he was good to go. He had no problem with change at all. He was use to the bottle because we had given him breast milk from a bottle on numerous occasions. It is me that is having to deal with the change. My chest is still working on getting rid of the milk and so I am still in a bit of pain. Personally I don't think any women should have to go through this. It is not fun. Every time I try to hold either of my boys I have to be so careful as to how I hold them so that they don't kick me. I am trying to be careful so that I don't develop mastitis. I think that I have received the short end of the stick in this situation. I know it will go away soon but until then it is not fun. Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do to help the pain??? Oh the joys of potty training. Some of you might be thinking why have you started it now? The answer is simple: I didn't want to have to work 24 + hours a week, run after two boys and always be running Aidan to the bathroom on my own. So, doing it now provides me an extra pair of hands....DADDY! I am so thankful I have had Jamie home to help me out.
Aidan has done well. We have been doing it for two weeks now and we definitely are not perfect but he is doing it. He started out being willing to tell us when he needed to go but in the last couple of days it seems that we have regressed. He doesn't seem to tell us much anymore when he needs to go and if he does have an accident he doesn't seem to care. I know I shouldn't be surprised by this regression as it is probably normal but it can be frustrating. We bought him some pull-ups for when we go out and for naps but they are the ones that give you a cool sensation when you pee and the last couple of times when he is napping he has woke up crying early from his nap and what we think has happened is that he has peed when asleep and then is startled awake by the cold feeling in his crotch. Hopefully he can get over that startling feeling....it is definitely doing its job but for him it is just a bit late :)
Our goal is that we will not have to buy another Costco size box of diapers for him anymore and that by the end of August he will have be able to go through the day without too many messes and then we will work on naps and nighttime after we have daytime conquered.

Wow...I feel like I'm reading a post I wrote myself (well, almost)! We are also working on potty training Natalie but we haven't been consistent...I know we just need to do it and stick with it!

And breastmilk to formula...something I have been SERIOUSLY considering. I am still up twice a night feeding Landon, and I am also SOOOO tired and extremely exhausted which results in me being extra moody with the family. Shaun really is encouraging me to switch...for all of our sanity. Now if Landon would only take a bottle...

Blessings to you...it's nice to know there are other people out there going thru the same things as me! =)

Megan...you don't know me, but I am a friend of Darin and Jody's. I have to admit being a bit of a blog stalker. I just wanted to let you know that I love reading about your family. I have been through the pain of weening, and I reccomend frozen veggies like peas and corn (left in the bag of course and used as a cold compress). They feel marvelous! I have had mastitis--cold compress works better than anything!

Megan,

That doesn't sound like fun!!! When I had mastitis I put cold green cabbage leaves in my bra and, like Leah said, it felt unbelievable incredible. Apparently something in the cabbage also helps your milk dry up if you keep them in all the time ...

All the best!!! I need to potty train my son soon too - he's a bit younger than yours. It's nice to hear that things are going okay!

I hope you start getting some rest soon!

Hey Megan! It's so good to be able to read about how your life is going. I can't believe how big Jaxon is already.
I know this might sound medieval but when I was trying to dry up I wrapped my self up with a big tensor bandage quite tight. It seemed weird to be bound up but it seemed to help. My sister did it too.
Take Care.

oh potty training, it's a night mare over here!!haha. my two year old daughter (28 months old) decided just after her 2nd birthday that she would go on the potty all the time. it was so easy she told us every time even when i went to town and we had no accidents, i thought i had a miracle child but then after that it has been horrible. we've had weeks where she won't go once on the potty and then we have weeks when it is just pee and pooh. i don't push her as it gets pretty ugly and i don't want to push her away from doing it all together. Just recently she wakes up and asks for panties and some days we go a whole day in panties except nap of course. I hope the timing works out for you for when you need your little man to be trained. i think this is one of the hardest things to do!! good luck from one mom to another

oh and i formula feed my 7 month old and if you notice that he isn't having frequent bowel movements or is really cranky switch to a lower iron formula, totally made the difference for my little girl. and the lower formula still meets the iron regquirement. also make sure that after a day or two of not pushing try to help him out with it, it can get really dry and tear their bum hole(sorry don't know the correct term!!hah) on the way out from pushing, beleive me it is painful to watch and have made a tript o the hospital because of it.

i'm glad you've made the decision that is right for you, and that Jaxon is transitioning well! I've also heard cold cabbage leaves work well, so my vote goes in for that too! I hope the transition for you goes quicker now so you can be more pain-free soon! and I would also suggest a tight sports bra to help with the drying up.

ah yes, potty training. YOu and Kristal both with little ones in addition to the challenges of PTing! WOW! So glad you have Jamie home to help out now - i know those extra hands are SO helpful! We all noticed in the nursery this week that Aidan was looking "slimmer" and we just had to peek, and saw a pull-up on him, and we all marveled! :) I hope for speedy success for you, Kristal and I through this adventurous process :)

Megan, Jaxon looks so much older and sitting up too, OK almost. Oh the joys of motherhood. You're right the transition is hard from breast feeding to bottle. I would agree with the recommendations of your other bloggers. Ice or cold compresses 10min/hour is helpful. A bag of frozen vegetables is good as I hve used that on my back. Don't use for more than 10mins as it might create rebound swelling. I chest binder can also be helpful, either an ACE wrap tightly or a bra several sizes to small. Wear it all the time. This to will pass. Can't wait to see you all next month. Give the boys a hug from Papa. Love, Dad......

It is fun to read your blog Megan and see pictures of the boys. I think Mary and Pam both used the cabbage leaves. They really work.
Mara is starting on the toilet training also. At 1 1/2 Mara's doing pretty good. Claire is really growing. Give the boys a squeeze for me and tell Jamie hi.

Holy cow. I feel tired just reading this! Man, you ARE superwoman. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do in order to get sleep and sanity.
